One of the Largest Telcos Relies on Oracle SCM Cloud, WMS Cloud, and FlexiPro
Background:
One of the largest telecommunications providers delivers services across wireless communications, cable television, and internet. The organization also holds significant assets in telecommunications infrastructure and media.
With a vast coast-to-coast supply chain network, the company undertook a multi-year, enterprise-wide modernization effort and selected Oracle Cloud as its strategic technology platform. As part of this transformation, the company implemented Oracle SCM and WMS Cloud. To enhance efficiency and streamline critical logistics and manufacturing operations, they adopted Intellinum’s FlexiPro platform midway through the Oracle Cloud rollout.
Challenges:
Given the complexity and scale of operations, the company faced several key challenges:
Field Returns of Customer Premise Equipment (CPE):
- The provider received large volumes of returned equipment such as modems and routers. Determining device ownership and return origin was time-consuming due to manual cross-referencing across multiple systems.
Kitting, Assembly, and Repair:
- The manufacturing processes were largely manual, requiring tedious serial number management, inventory updates, and offline barcode label printing.
Technician Deployment & Inventory Correction:
- Devices deployed to the field were sometimes misallocated, causing delays. Technicians often required support desk assistance to resolve inventory mismatches before installation could proceed.
Bulk Transfers of serial controlled items:
- High volume bulk warehouse and tech to tech transfers of serial controlled items needed complex validations for each serial number while still requiring simple and efficient process
Objectives:
- Unified Mobile UI: Deploy a single mobile solution integrated with Oracle SCM and WMS Cloud.
- Efficiency Gains: Automate manual processes and implement barcode scanning to boost productivity.
- Compliance and Governance: Ensure adherence to security and audit standards.
- Serial Number Tracking: Enable real-time device validation through scanning.
- Oracle API Alignment: Leverage Oracle Cloud’s standard APIs for streamlined automation.
- User Experience: Improve employee productivity with an intuitive mobile interface.
Solution:
FlexiPro was deployed to address key operational challenges during the Oracle SCM and WMS Cloud implementation:
CPE Returns:
- FlexiPro allowed serial scans to validate ownership, warranty status, and source system alignment. Building the LPNs in FlexiPro was then done once all serials were scanned. Users would then close the LPN into WMS—eliminating the need for manual verification and reducing errors in inventory tracking.
- Identifying different SKUs compared to the SKUs already scanned in the LPN and allowing mixing or rejection of such SKUs.
- Scanning the parent shipped item, but receiving returns of the base serial component from the item relationship established in item master.
- Blocking transactions when on hand for the same serial number existed in any inventory org or WMS facility, allowing for easy reconciliation versus duplication of inventory in multiple orgs/facilities.
Kitting & Assembly:
- The platform automated serial tracking, inventory posting, and barcode label generation through an integrated mobile UI, significantly improving process speed and reducing manual labor.
- Identifying a valid bar code from a set of barcodes simultaneously scanned from a multiple barcode reader. The set of barcodes on the device label came from different suppliers that had different barcode patterns with different and multiple delimiters.
- The UI was built so kitting completion transactions could scan to be touchless with multiple label printer defaults. Then, automatic label selection would be based on case pack size and the automatic case label and item label printing would have an automatic serial-controlled material issue. Copying of multiple serial attributes from serial component to parent item would then flow seamlessly.
Technician Inventory Adjustments:
- Field technicians could scan a device’s serial number and resolve inventory mismatches independently, improving responsiveness and reducing support desk escalations.
Bulk Warehouse Transfers:
- High volume bulk warehouse and tech to tech transfers of serial controlled items (with hundreds of serial numbers) with complex validations for each serial number were performed in less than a minute, while still giving operators very easy and efficient processes for validation and reconciliation.
